Dwarf Galaxy Rotation Curves and the Core Problem of Dark Matter Haloes

چکیده
The standard cold dark matter (CDM) model has recently been challenged by the claim that dwarf galaxies have dark matter haloes with constant density cores, whereas CDM predicts haloes with steeply cusped density distributions. Consequently, numerous alternative dark matter candidates have recently been proposed. In this paper, we scrutinize the observational evidence for the incongruity between dwarf galaxies and the CDM model. To this end, we analyze the rotation curves of 20 late-type dwarf galaxies studied by Swaters (1999). Taking the effects of beam-smearing and adiabatic contraction into account, we fit mass models to these rotation curves with dark matter haloes with different cusp slopes, ranging from constant density cores to r cusps. Even though the effects of beam smearing are small for these data, the uncertainties in the stellar mass-to-light ratio and the limited spatial sampling of the halo’s density distribution hamper a unique mass decomposition. Consequently, the rotation curves in our sample cannot be used to discriminate between dark haloes with constant density cores and r cusps. We show that the dwarf galaxies analyzed here are consistent with cold dark matter haloes in a ΛCDM cosmology, and that there is thus no need to abandon the idea that dark matter is cold and collisionless. However, the data is also consistent with any alternative dark matter model that produces dark matter haloes with central cusps less steep than r. In fact, we argue that based on existing HI rotation curves alone at best weak limits can be obtained on cosmological parameters and/or the nature of the dark matter. In order to make progress, rotation curves with higher spatial resolution and independent measurements of the mass-to-light ratio of the disk are required.

The Cores of Dwarf Galaxy Haloes
We use N-body simulations to examine the eeects of mass outtows on the density prooles of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes surrounding dwarf galaxies. In particular, we investigate the consequences of supernova-driven winds that expel a large fraction of the baryonic component from a dwarf galaxy disk after a vigorous episode of star formation. We show that this sudden loss of mass leads to the fo...

Cosmological numerical simulations of galaxy formation have led to the cuspy density profile of pure cold dark matter halo toward the center, which is in sharp contradiction with the observations of the rotation curves of cold dark matter-dominated dwarf and low surface brightness disk galaxies, the latter tends to favor mass profiles with a flat central core. Many efforts have been devoted to ...

We explore fundamental properties of the distribution of low-mass dark matter haloes within the cosmic web using warm dark matter (WDM) and cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological simulations. Using self-abundance-matched mock galaxy catalogues, we show that the distribution of dwarf galaxies in a WDM universe, wherein low-mass halo formation is heavily suppressed, is nearly indistinguishable to th...
متن کاملUnderstanding the shape and diversity of dwarf galaxy rotation curves in ΛCDM
The shape and diversity of dwarf galaxy rotation curves is at apparent odds with dark matter halos in a Λ Cold Dark Matter (ΛCDM) cosmology. We use mock data from isolated dwarf galaxy simulations to show that this owes to three main effects. Firstly, stellar feedback heats dark matter, leading to a ‘coreNFW’ dark matter density profile with a slowly rising rotation curve. Secondly, if close to...
